Chine-colle is a technique, used in conjunction with printmaking processes, like linoleum carving. It results in a two-layered paper support: a tissue-thin paper, cut to the size of the printing plate, and a larger, thicker support paper below. Both the tissue and the support sheet are placed on top of the inked plate and run together through the printing press. The process creates a subtle, delicate backdrop to the printed image. Paloma will guide you in this step by step process to create colorful prints made with only one carved plate.

Ben Blount is an artist, designer and letterpress printer best known for work that explores questions of race and identity and the stories we tell ourselves about living in America. Ben is a believer in the power of the printed word and shares his passion for print and design by speaking and teaching around the country. Laura Beyer is an artist specializing in print, paper and book design. She graduated with her BFA from Albion College in Albion, Michigan and her MFA from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She works as an arts educator at various institutions in the Detroit area including Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center & College for Creative Studies. Her business, Hearty Greetings, focuses on the production of letterpress goods and handmade books. Laura’s artwork has been collected by colleges & universities, private collections as well as the Detroit Institute of Art.

Whether it’s a clever phrase or a classic design with your name or monogram, students will be able to customize their stationery in every step of the process. Participants will design their pieces with movable type, learn how to lock up a chase, and mix ink by hand. Each person will print their own design on one of our tabletop platen presses.

Liz has exhibited widely in the US and has work in institutional collections including the Poetry Foundation, the Center for Book and Paper Art, and Art in Print Magazine. For the past 10 years, she has taught university classes and community workshops in letterpress printing. Liz also sells her own prints through her Instagram, @theaquariushouse, to raise money for social justice campaigns. She lives and works in Berkley, Michigan.
